Introduction

A small group of librarians have been participating in informal discussions with OCLC about the future of FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology). To better gauge interest in the current features of OCLC FAST, as well as potential enhancements to the existing product, we are conducting this survey as a follow-up to round-robin questions on FAST discussed by the OCLC Research Library Partners Metadata Managers Focus Group in June 2016. (These discussions were summarized in the HangingTogether blog post on Faceted vocabularies in October 2016.)

This survey is not intended to compare FAST with use of pre-coordinated subject headings such as Library of Congress Subject Headings.

Please distribute this survey to  all staff within your institution or organization who apply subject terminology to their metadata. We encourage you to participate in this survey whether or not you currently use FAST. Survey results will be reported on the same lists used for distributing the survey. We anticipate that the survey should take 5 to 15 minutes to complete.

Please respond by December 15, 2017.

You can return to the survey to edit your responses at any time until the survey closes, as long as you use the same device. Questions that require a response are marked with an asterisk (*).

A read-only version of the entire survey is available from Kate Harcourt.

If you have questions, please contact Kate Harcourt, Director for Original and Special Collections Cataloging, Columbia University, at harcourt@columbia.edu.
