Archives: Memory, Culture, and the Production of History in the Americas (2009)

National Endowment for Humanities start-up grant in the digital humanities to advance collaboration among archival, library, and scholarly communities in Latin America and the United States. The proposal focuses on the Andean nation of Bolivia, the poorest country in mainland South America, representing an underserved area of shared technology for the digital humanities. The project team will plan and implement innovative digital initiatives through collaborative agreements; document best practices through the reciprocal management of digital archives in different national settings; and prototype new digital tools for preserving and making accessible digital resources in ways that allow their reuse in other projects. The challenges this project addresses concern language barriers and national sensitivities about the ownership and authorized use of primary sources that constitute both a national patrimony and a universal cultural resource.
